I recently lost my Mom to sepsis, the second leading cause of death in the U.S.
My recommendations are:
* Families and patients need a way to request a sepsis screening including the two blood tests available.
* The likelihood of sepsis increases by 7% a day, at a certain number of days, patients should have a daily screening for sepsis.
* Signs in hospital rooms should be alert the medical team of sepsis risk.
* Patients and families should be able to call an immediate medical alert, even in ICU.
* Nurses should not be allowed to filter concerns and families/patients should be able to add questions/requests to patient charts.
* Anytime a doctor/nurse chooses not to use temperature, blood pressure, or other measurement, risk management and an intensivist/doctor review should occur.
