Psychological and neurobiological research links exposure to trauma with learning and behavior problems (Steele, 2007). This includes difficulties in the following areas: language, communication and problem-solving skills;regulating emotions; and peer and teacher relationships. Trauma is also linked to an increase in impulsiveness and aggressiveness.Overall, a traumatized child can have trouble behaving and learning (Rothschild, 2006). Frequently, these problems are treated ineffectively as disciplinary issues. An effective school-based mental health program will offer, prevention, consultation, assessment, treatment, and follow-up. Promote students’ emotional and social well being, to ensure early identification of mental health needs, and offer timely access to mental health services.
