If a majority of votes is required to win an election, you can vote for the real candidate of choice, even a third party candidate, without fear of wasting your vote. We have elected Presidents, Senators, Congressmen and others with only a plurality, sometimes less than 40%. That means a majority of votes were cast for somebody other than the "winner". Requiring a runoff election in the event of nobody receiving a majority would make elections more democratic and better represent the true will of the majority.
