mandate Medicaid provider recognition for professional counselors and marriage and family therapists

Created by J.L. on April 22, 2014

Currently, under federal law, there is no mandate in Medicaid behavioral health coverage granting professional counselors and marriage and family therapists Medicaid provider status. While individual states may opt to include counselors and marriage and family therapists as Medicaid providers, many do not leaving consumers with fewer options for behavioral health services in their communities. In addition, licensed social workers and psychologists are included as mandated providers at the federal level leading to inequities in professional recognition and scope of practice. We therefore petition President Barack Obama to examine this issue and work towards creating this mandate.
