The United States is one of only four countries on the entire planet that doesn't mandate paid maternity leave, and we're certainly the only "first world" nation that doesn't require it. What does that say about our priorities?
Studies have shown that mothers and babies spending time together is beneficial in lots of ways, but most women are forced to go back to work as soon as possible because they can't afford to take the unpaid time off. Even those who could swing it financially often have to go back after just 6 weeks, because that's the legal minimum.
It's time for us to show that we truly do value families and allow parents to care for their young children.
