Mandate the reduction of organic materials in landfills

Created by M.R. on December 05, 2012

The federal government should mandate the reduction of organic materials going to landfills by 75% over the next 10 years.

When organic materials decompose in landfills, it produces methane gas. Methane gas is a major source of greenhouse gas, with 20 times higher impact compared with CO2. 16% of methane emissions come from organic material decomposing in landfills. Elimination of these organic materials from landfills will significantly lower our contribution to global pollution and decrease the overall amount of greenhouse gasses entering our atmosphere.

While there are likely many options for achieving this goal, one method is to increase the use of composting, both small and large scale.
