Self-driving cars have great potential. They may minimize accidents, improve the mobility of the disabled, and improve our use of our existing transportation infrastructure.
However, like any new technology, self-driving electronics, controls, and sensors will evolve rapidly. As part of the agreement to let self-driving cars use taxpayer-funded roads, the self-driving technology must be able to be upgraded at cost for a period of ten years from date of a self-driving car's manufacture.
Requiring manufactures to make this technology upgradeable will help prevent junkyards from filling up with outdated, less-capable self-driving cars. Older but upgraded cars will be more beneficial for everyone than those with outdated technology.
