Although military personnel are required to go through post-deployment mental health screening, studies show that a higher percentage test positive for a mental health issue in anonymous screenings than in those containing personal identifiers. This means that many service members do not admit to all of their symptoms when the tests are linked to their names. This lack of full disclosure often stems from stigma associated with mental health disorders.
Furthermore, even if individuals admit they have a problem, many still do not seek help. This is why mandatory therapy would be so beneficial.
Untreated PTSD and/or depression can lead to debilitating effects, in addition to a higher suicide rate in military personnel, so it is necessary to promote awareness and destigmatize these disorders.
