mandate that WIC programs cover whole milk for mothers and for children of all ages.

Created by R.G. on October 18, 2014

The WIC program is supposed to provide health and nutrition support for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and young children. As part of its food voucher program, WIC distributes coupons for milk. However, the program restricts whole milk to children 1 to 2 years of age. This flies in the face of increasing scientific evidence that whole milk is better for you ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22810464 ). WIC food vouchers are provided to women and children who are at risk of insufficient nutrition. The rationale that whole milk might cause weight gain is not only scientifically unsupported, but makes no sense in a context where those living in poverty may need all the calories they can get. Why are we depriving mothers and children of the best nutrition?
