In an increasingly stressful environment, the practice of yoga can be used as a powerful tool for students to increase their mental wellness and reduce the effects of psychological disorders.
Rampant gun violence among America's youth has created the need for an affordable and safe mental health remedy. Several recent studies suggest that yoga reduces the stress response, which includes the sympathetic nervous system and the stress hormone cortisol; this may help strengthen social attachments, reduce stress and relieve anxiety and depression in students.
Rather than wait for more violent outbursts from those with mental health issues, teaching yoga as part of physical fitness education in schools is an affordable way to give all students the ability to reduce their owns tress levels.
