Mandatory Minimums for Sexual Assault

Created by Y.N. on June 11, 2016

Sexual assault is against the law, but sentencing varies with the locale. Recently, Judge Aaron Persky in California sentenced Brock Turner - a convicted rapist - to only 6 months in jail, while Cory Batey in Tennessee received 15-25 years for the same crime under strikingly similar circumstances. Therefore, we request that a law be enacted implementing mandatory minimum sentencing for sexual assault. The current lottery of sentencing system discourages victims and encourages predators. America needs to send a clear message of "zero-tolerance" for sexual assault, so that sexual predators understand that these dehumanizing crimes will be dealt with harshly.
