Marriage vs. Civil Union - Separation of Church and State

I have heard a lot of talk about "redefining the meaning of marriage",yet it seems to me,the most important part of what marriage IS,has been ignored:"MARRIAGE" is a SACRAMENT of the CHURCH. A CIVIL UNION on the other hand, (as recognized by other countries around the world),is a joining of individuals which brings with it certain RIGHTS as provided by the GOVERNMENT -but it is NOT a religious ceremony! Therefore, I feel, the government's action of trying to "redefine MARRIAGE" is a violation of church and state. Our churches don't define what it takes to get a driver's license, and our gov shouldn't be "redefining" words historically related to sacraments (marriage,baptism,reconciliation,etc) of the church.Adapt the terminology so both can benefit without compromising religious integrity.
