Maximize pathways for disability-based discharge of federal student loans.

Created by A.W. on January 18, 2016

Currently, there are a few major student loan discharge options for disabled borrowers, unable to work, and make payments on their loans. However these pathways are laden with often insurmountable hurdles and typically fail to provide relief for many disabled student loan borrowers who will likely never earn sufficient income to pay off their student loans. As such, I propose a simplified pathway to student loan discharge based on disability. The pathway I propose is to reform the discharge guidelines for borrowers deemed eligible for any of the SSA benefit programs (i.e. SSI, SSDI, retirement benefits). This provision would require automatic federal student loan discharge for any borrower, deemed eligible for for SSA benefits, at any point, post college graduation.
