Media and the fashion industry should be required to use healthy models and clearly label “photoshopped” images.

Created by A.M. on February 10, 2013

Mandate the fashion industry and media to indicate the nature of photo shopped images in the form of a clear label. Also, the fashion industry should be restricted from hiring unhealthy, low BMI models. Anorexia has become a socially transmitted disease. Women are constantly barraged by images of a perceived ideal that is neither healthy nor reasonable. Young women are the most vulnerable to media influences. According to data from the National Eating Disorders Association the average BMI for top models is 16.3. The average woman is 5’4” and 140 pounds; to achieve a BMI of 16.3 a 5’4” woman would have to weigh 95 pounds. Normal BMI is 18.5-24.9 according to the WHO, thus these models can be considered grossly underweight. Stop the media from perpetuating unhealthy images of starving women.
