DFAS requires a couple to be married for ten years before they will pay the spouse of a divorced military member directly. When a couple divorces before ten years and the military spouse is awarded a portion of the military members retirement pay, the member must pay their spouse directly for the rest of their lives. By making military retirement pay the soul ownership of the military member until ten years have passed will not only enhance the military members life, but will also discourage spouses from targeting military members just for their benefits’.
