Donald Trump is an affront to everything Minnesotans have historically stood for. He is phenomenally unpopular in our state, coming in a dismal third place in his party's presidential caucuses. He also brazenly attacked Minnesota, and its traditional openness toward refugees, in a recent speech.
Minnesotans have a distinct local culture that in some ways has more in common with Canada than with many other parts of the US. As such, with Trump in the White House, joining Canada may look like an attractive option to some Minnesotans. We wish to have that option, via popular referendum, and would like the President to openly endorse and express support for the idea before he leaves office.
We also support other states' rights to determine their own futures in the wake of this event.
