Modernize Social Security Administration policy on altering gender on an individual record.

Created by S.E. on October 28, 2014

Currently, SSA requires individuals to "present evidence to establish their identity and a letter from the surgeon or attending physician verifying the sex change surgery has been completed." They will not accept a diagnosis from a qualified mental health professional that states the individual has been evaluated and deemed to truly have the gender they say they have, nor will SSA accept a current state-issued ID with the individual's sex indicated in line (as closely as possible) with their actual gender identity.

Proof of Sex Reassignment Surgery is an archaic and inaccurate means of determining how to properly and respectfully interact with and refer to transgender individuals. Please amend SSA policy to remove this draconic roadblock, and support your transgender constituents.
