Modify middle and highschool starting times to allow teens to get the amount of sleep they require to be healthy

Created by J.M. on September 05, 2016

On average teens don't get the amount of sleep they need to live a healthy life. Many school systems start their day at an early time such as 7:45 am. Science has found that during puberty teens experience a suppression of melatonin and at the same time a delay of biological rythyms which makes them want to get to bed later. This is not them being "teenagers" Now, the CDC is recommending schools start no earlier than 8:30 am, however that's just a recomendation it's not required. And not only that, but less than 1 in 5 middle and highschool a start later than 8:30 am. Because of this students are having to wake up before 6:30 which to an adult that feels like waking up at 4. It's in the middle of the night for them. These students are sleep deprived, making them perform worse in school.
