OxyContin is a prescription drug which is an opioid that acts on the brain like heroin.
Allowing children to be prescribed this medication puts more of it in potential circulation to be sold and abused.
This causes dependency, the production of opioids is increased while taking OxyContin. However, when taken off of the drug your body has already produced more opiod receptors to account for the larger influx of opioids. Which now means your body isn't producing enough opioids to account for the amount of opioid receptors in your brain, causing withdrawal effects.
There are adults who have resorted to the recreational use of heroin to cope with these withdrawals. This can set off early addiction in kids. We need to prevent this possibility from spreading to our youth.
