In 1804 the 12th amendment was proposed because in that era communication was limited. There was no internet, phones, TVs, and very few newspapers. 40% of Americans were illiterate at this time. They believed that we were not knowledgeable enough on the candidates to cast a direct vote. Now we are very capable of making an educated vote and we don’t need an EC to cast a majority vote for us. This amendment makes the minority voters in their own state not count. Take NYS which has voted for Dem president for the last 6 elections. In the last president election NYS voted 62% for Dem, which means all 29 of NYS EC votes go for Dem under the 12th amendment. So if you voted for Rep your vote no longer counted in NYS.
