Naming any meaningful legislation for the victims of this school shooting will keep the public and lawmakers focused on finding a solution to address gun violence. Legislators should be made aware that if they choose to abdicate their responsibility to protect citizens in order to curry favor with a pro-assault-weapon lobby, they debase the memory of the victims in Sandy Hook. Likewise, choosing to make meaningful change in laws regarding assault weapon ownership will honor the memory of those victims by protecting other citizens.
