For over thirty years the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) as well as its fine sailors and marines served the people of our nation with great distinction and valor. The "Fighting I", served in the Pacific Theater of operations during World War II, 3 deployments during the Vietnam War and acted as a recovery ship for the Mercury and Gemini space programs. To this day the USS Intrepid continues to serve as the centerpiece of the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum in New York City.
In honor of this great vessel and all those who served aboard it, we petition that one of the new Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers become the fifth ship to be named USS Intrepid.
