We, the licensed electricians of the US, sometimes travel between states for work. In the current system, only some states are recognized by other states for licensing. We believe that a National Electrical Code should imply a National Electrical Standard that will recognize ANY standard-based electrical license. regardless of the state in which it was obtained. Appropriately, more states are requiring specific training and time in the trade (and a documented ratio of journeyman/apprentice). However if someone obtained a license from a state not reciprocated, they now have to prove 4 years of an approved trade school. This doesn't work for older, yet still capable electricians that were never required to have structured schooling. This issue demands clarification and consistency.
