Animals have served honorably in every war past and present. Over 9 million animals that did not have a choice perished in World War I alone. Horses hauling supplies and artillery through treacherous terrain, dogs locating injured soldiers and navigating infantry through minefields, cats serving as ratters preventing the spread of disease in the deadly trenches and on naval ships, pigeons delivering vital messages from stranded soldiers, along with many other animals completing heroic feats of strength. These animals above all else provided much needed comfort to soldiers who were experiencing the dread of the Great Wars. Our fallen animal companions should be remembered and honored with a national holiday.
