negotiate a treaty with Italy for recognition of U.S. driver's licenses.

As a U.S. citizen living abroad in Italy, it is extraordinarily difficult to obtain a driver's license to legally drive in the country. After living in Italy for one year, you are obligated to go through the process as if you were again a teenager -- taking a written test, followed by driving courses and then a driving test. The process is expensive (around $1,000) and time consuming (taking 3-4 months). We ask that the U.S. government negotiate a treaty or other international agreement to allow recognition or conversion of U.S. driver's licenses in Italy.
