Although laws do exist regarding bicycle safety, we do not possess any sort of law that requires cyclists to wear a bicycle helmet when riding. Head injury is the most common cause of death in bicycle related crashes.
We are advocating for a new bicycle safety policy that would require all persons 18 years of age or younger to wear a bicycle helmet while riding. 80-90% of children own a bicycle by the time they are in second grade. We believe that requiring minors to wear helmets will form safe habits that will benefit for the rest of their lives. The annual societal cost of bicycle related injuries and deaths is approximately $8 billion. In case of an accident, wearing a helmet will prevent injury and reduce any resulting medical expenses to the government.
