Our unemployment remains high, the attempts to mitigate the problem with monetary policy have had relatively little impact (0% rate, quantitative easing), the stimulus bills and tax cuts have not been enough, and businesses are sitting on a lot of cash. Conservatives want to pass austerity measures, but this would make the problem worse (look at the results of the British austerity of the last two years).
We need a new stimulus to address the lack of demand, that should go to activities with a high multiplier. This money should go to funding for state and local government, education, and long-term investment. We need to address our long-term problems as well: income inequality, financial regulations, global warming, social security, trade deficits, public debt.
