Peter Liang is being charged with manslaughter in the death of Akai Gurley. Liang said his gun had gone off unintentionally, the bullet rattling off a wall and into an unsuspecting man’s chest. This led to a manslaughter indictment, setting it apart from other well-publicized police encounters that took the lives of Michael Brown, and Eric Garner. The shooting of Michael Brown occurred on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri, asuburb of St. Louis. Brown, an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, an African American died in Staten Island, NY, after a white police officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold. NYPD policy prohibits the use of chokeholds. What happens to white police officers? No indictment!
