The Vatican was granted statehood by the itailian dictator Benito Mussolini in 1929 for the Pope's support of his fascist government. Since then they have used the diplomatic immunity that comes with being an independent state to cover up sexual abuse committed by priests in the US and other countries.Being a head of state means the pope, who knows of these abuses but does nothing, cannot be sued or prosecuted for covering up these crimes. We owe to the victims who were sexually abused by their priest to help them get justice.
