The proposal to allow thousands of deaths of Bald Eagles each year, by amending the Eagle Take Permitting process, is not based on thoughtful consideration of the biology of the Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle population cannot support the loss to its population that would occur if this proposition goes forward. The Bald Eagle was taken off the Endangered List in 2007, after many years of concentrated effort. Given that each Bald Eagle breeding pair has on average 2 chicks a year and only 1 of those eaglets makes it through its first year of life, this kind of take/kill is unacceptable for any kind of population stability. There are approximately 143,000 Bald Eagles. The permits may allow the killing of 4200 bald eagle a year. The math simply does not work in the eagles favor.
