In October of 2012, Malala Yousufzai, only 15, was shot in the head by the Taliban on her way home from school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It took an outpouring of international support to save Malala's life - and despite coming within inches of death, she is now recovering in a British hospital.
Malala was targeted because she was an outspoken advocate for girls' education - urging girls to resist the tactics used by the Taliban to prevent them from going to school, and for this, they wanted her dead.
Nobel Peace Prize nominations from high-ranking members of the Obama Administration would send a signal to the world that the United States' stands behind not just Malala, but young girls everywhere seeking the education they deserve, despite the adversity they face.
