Justice O'Connor was a member of the Supreme Court from 1981 until 2006 when she retired to care for her ailing husband, who unfortunately passed away in 2009. She has continued to be active in the judiciary by hearing cases in the Courts of Appeals. Republicans would have no excuse to deny her appointment as she was first appointed by Reagan and received unanimous approval in the Senate. She was a moderate while on the bench and was the swing vote in many cases. She would not pull the court right or left and she would likely not serve a long term and allow the next President, whoever that may be, to appoint her successor.
