Due to the terrible treatment of natives and the fact that he was not the first person to discover the Americas, there is no reason to honor him with a federal holiday. In short he was nothing more than an explorer who murdered and enslaved many innocent people in the name of greed. Countless other people are more worthy of a holiday, perhaps real American heroes and brave explorers like the members of the Apollo program deserve a day of recognition, they did not commit genocide or enslave people. Or maybe the peaceful people Columbus brutalized could get a holiday instead?
