Extracting oil from tar sands is extremely devastating to the area where mining occurs and uses vast quantities of water and energy. The pipeline will cross enivornmentally sensitive areas of the country and spills always occur. Most important, however, is burning this oil will add tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, exacerbating the greenhouse gas effect and further increasing the temperature of the atmosphere.
