We must improve safety and reduce gun violence. However, tens of thousands of current laws are more than enough. Law-abiding persons are the only ones who obey gun control laws, not criminals for whom they are drafted. Thus, gun control laws do not reduce or eliminate crime. In fact, such laws leave law-abiding persons defenseless against criminals who do not obey those laws. It is not at all clear any of the additional gun control laws being now considered would have prevented any of the terrible shootings that have precipitated the current response. In fact there is strong evidence so-called "gun-free zones" simply encourage violence since opposition in them is nonexistent. Instead of the placebo of more gun bans or gun and owner registration, we need to enforce current laws.
