I urge the White House to not include firearm or magazine bans in reaction to recent tragedies. Banning such items will do little to stem the violence of the criminals who use them adversely, but will prevent responsible law-abiding citizens from owning them.
Instead focus future actions on tightening controls, more thorough screening, and education.
You can tighten controls by perhaps issuing special permits to individuals for certain types of firearms, overseeing person-to-person sales, and closing the gun show loophole.
Screening should be as thorough as possible, including mental health history, and potentially other people residing in the household.
Education is key. People need to respect all weapons, and use them responsibly. Courses could be required to own certain weapons.
