We petition that marriage no longer be recognize by the federal government. Instead, all marriage in the federal government's eyes will be considered civil unions. The term "Marriage" will only be recognized in the churches that allow it.
This way, we keep church and state separate and everyone who receives a civil union has the same rights as everyone else, such as marital status on tax returns. This also keeps the term "marriage" solely with the religious institution that are fighting to keep marriage between one man and one women
This addressed the two biggest issues with gay marriage. One, all people in the United States deserve equal rights. Two, that the term marriage is a religious term and should stay as defined in the religious doctrines.
