The name, the Islamic State, or ISIS. plays into what that terrorist group is trying to accomplish. By calling them that, we are giving them legitimacy as a state and implicating a an entire religion in their cause.
President Obama has been using the acronym ISIL. That acronym still includes Islamic State.
French President Hollande referred to the group that claimed responsibility for the attacks as Daesh. Secretary Kerry is also using the word.
Daesh is an insult to the group. They have banned it in their own territory and warned against others using it. It means "bigot" in Arabic.
We're at war with an idea. Let's use tactics of changing an idea by renaming it by consensus. If enough of the people hear this reasoning, it will work.
