The United States is one of the only countries world wide that does not offer a paid maternity leave benefit for the women of it's country. I am proposing the US offer some paid maternity leave for it's working female population similar to the paid maternity leave offered by California. Women who have been employed for the previous year should be entitled to at least 75% of their current salary for no less than 12 weeks following the birth of their child/children. FMLA does not go far enough by just offering job security. I'm sure the government can work out the details and nuances regarding adoption, paternity leave, etc., however, I strongly feel this should be a minimum offered for mothers.
