Given that the Sultan of the Republic of Brunei has declared that his government will phase in Sharia law in his country, which will result in the death penalty for acts of blasphemy or sodomy (including any homosexual acts), as well as amputations for minor crimes;
And given that the Sultan himself seems to believe he is above rebuke regarding his lavish lifestyle and that of his family;
And given that President Obama has recently referred to the Sultan as "my good friend";
And given that President Obama also stated that he has "no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgendered persons in ways that try to intimidate them or are harmful to them";
We request that the Obama administration publicly condemn the Sultan and urge that this action be reversed.
