In 1976, our federal government decided to give a minority of our population an entire month of celebration, education, and understanding. While the purpose of this was to help underscore the important achievements of the african americans that have given to our nation's power, it has instead been a continued tool of separation between the accomplishments of one group of Americans against the accomplishments of others. Its a continued source of racial tension in the United States, and can be seen as having the opposite affect that it may have once been meant to have on the population. Simply removing it isn't an option; by doing so, you send a message to every young African American in the nation that their deeds are no longer considered important enough to remember.
