More soldiers and veterans have died from suicide than combat since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan in 2001. The rate of Military suicides is now at a record high. Extensive psychological research shows clear linkages between tours of combat duty, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and suicide. Nonetheless, the military refuses to give this epidemic the attention it deserves. Officially recognizing all military and veteran suicides as casualties of war would put significant pressure on the United States military to: (1) Give all veterans with PTSD the care and treatment they deserve, (2) Give all families of veterans with PTSD or who commit suicide the financial support they deserve, and (3) Pursue a more peaceful and less damaging strategy in the Middle East.
