Marriage should not be defined by politicians and couple's benefits (such as survivor and medical benefits) should not be defined by religion. The government should begin only recognizing civil unions for all couples (gay or straight) and allow the religious institutions to decide who they want to marry. This way the couples do not need to suffer from not receiving benefits that they otherwise would from the government or other business institutions and religious groups get to continue to decide which marriages they wish to recognize.
