The second amendment provides US citizens the right to bear arms, however, those with known history of certain types of acute or chronic mental illness are without the mental stability or capability to handle weapons without unnecessary high risk of potential harm to themselves or others.
A limited restriction serves to protect US Citizens from mentally unstable individuals being allowed access to firearms in their possession or residence. This should include restricting the sale of firearms to households where resident minor children have known history of mental illness.
This measure would be a welcome compromise by maintaining second amendment rights of those many good law abiding citizens who wish to protect and defend themselves while appeasing those who seek further gun control.
