Foreign aid makes up only around 0.8% of our budget. In a Program for Public Consultation survey, Americans were asked what an appropriate percentage would be, and the answer was roughly 10%.
While we do need to reduce spending, we should focus on wasteful spending and the big chunks. Foreign aid may or may not get other countries to side with us on issues, but that's not the point. It is partly intended to help fix some of the root causes of terrorism. It can also help with natural disasters such as the Horn of Africa famine. It improves our greatly tarnished image in the world. It can also, in the long term, create new allies; for example, US aid to India helped in its development and India is now one of our biggest allies in Asia.
Please oppose any legislation that cuts foreign aid.
