In February 2015, after 4 million comments to the FCC, 10 million emails and 500,000 calls to Congress, 100 on the ground protests at government buildings, and 20 million social media posts, ISPs were reclassified as "common carriers" by the FCC. The FCC passed net neutrality rules, which enforced fair and equal treatment of all data on the internet.
However, on February 2016, Senator Mark Lee introduced the "Restoring Internet Freedom Act (RIFA)", which would repeal the FCC's net neutrality rules and prevent the agency from ever passing similar rules ever again. As passing net neutrality was among the greatest efforts of mass-interest, passing this law would be spitting in the face of democracy.
We urge the president to oppose RIFA and acknowledge the importance of mass-interest.
