We the People do hereby request the immediate ordainment of the humble but regal POTATO as the national animal of these United States. The POTATO, unassuming in stature yet that most versatile of food crops, is in fact much more than food. POTATO has fought with the United States in every major conflict since the 1855 Battle of Ty-ho Bay against Chinese pirates. The majority of purported UFO sightings are in fact glimpses of flying POTATOES. POTATO has won the Tour de France in a submarine. Please honor POTATO in accordance with its accomplishments and contributions to this great nation - recognize POTATO as the national animal of the United States of America. Good luck.
