We hereby request the President Obama and Congress support the forthcoming legislative bill, Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act or enact legislation that will demand the demilitarization of all local law enforcement in U.S. cities with populations under 1 million people. We further request that in the very few cities exceeding 1 million people, that stringent safeguards be put into place to assure proper training and use of the equipment so there is no assault on law abiding citizens exercising their Constitutional rights.
Our neighborhoods are not warzones, and police officers should not be treating us like wartime enemies. Any yet, every year, billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment flows from the federal government to state and local police departments. It ends now.
