At the height of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Department of Defense via the California National Guard enticed soldiers to re-enlist by offering re-enlistment bonuses, and inappropriately issued approximately 10,000 of these bonuses due to fraudulent activities conducted by individuals within the California National Guard; however, the re-enlisting soldiers acted in good faith with agents of the United States Government, had no part in the fraud, and did serve additional tours of duty. The soldiers receiving these bonuses have since been ordered to repay these bonuses, with interest charges, and have been punished with wage garnishments and tax liens if they refuse. I petition POTUS to order that the claw back of these re-enlistment bonuses be ceased, effective immediately.
