The DOD furloughs are arbitrary and not required. The govt is picking for exemption those civilians they think are critical and sending home everybody else for what amounts to a 20% cut in pay for 3 months. These are the same civilian employees that have had their pay frozen for three years while our govt continues to spend billions of dollars a year on unnecessary programs. If the DOD travel budget alone was truly cut across the board by less than 10% that alone would save more than cutting the pay of our dedicated civilian employees for 11 weeks. This has to stop and our politicians need to find this savings elsewhere.
